VILLUPURAM: The proposal to set up a medical college at Mundiampakkam eri in Villupuram district has triggered protests from environmentalists and rights activists. When about 20 activists of the Lakes and Ponds Water Resources Protection Movement, an umbrella organisation of half a dozen outfits, were distributing handbills at Villupuram on Thursday against the proposal, the police rounded them up. The handbill questioned the propriety of choosing the lakes for setting up medical college in Villupuram and a bus stand at Tindivanam. It pointed out that by opting to convert water sources, the government was violating its own rule.
