ABVP seeks quota in PUC

Bangalore: The Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad has urged the State Government to declare 75 per cent of the seats in the aided and unaided pre-university colleges in the State as government quota seats and distribute them to the students, who had passed in large numbers in the SSLC examination.

In a press release, the parishad State Organising Secretary N. Ravi Kumar suggested that vigilance squads should be set up in each district headed by retired judges. The students' representatives and educationists should be members of such squads.

Mr. Ravi Kumar urged the Government to empower the district magistrates, tahsildars and educational officers to initiate legal action against the institutions, which were collecting donations and exorbitant fees from the parents.

A centralised system for allotting seats and collection of fees should be set up.

He alleged that many colleges were collecting Rs. 100 to Rs. 500 for applications and prospectus as against Rs. 15 fixed by the college managements themselves. The students belonging to the poor and lower middle class families were not in a position to get seats because of the huge donations and fees, he said.
