Employment exchange to conduct job fairs

MADURAI: A Government employment exchange conducting job fairs for private companies may sound a bit strange.

This will be a regular feature in Madurai from July when private employers and job seekers meet under the aegis of District Employment Office. Christened `Velai vaippu sandhai,' the fair is planned on the second Friday of every month and all private companies can approach the office for participation. "Till they get a Government job, the candidates can at least work somewhere and gain experience. We will invite employers and give them all data in CD format if they want," the Assistant Director (Employment), Pitchamma Arumugom, said on Wednesday.

Private companies were being told to provide details of vacancies and required eligibility of candidates.

Ms. Arumugom, who is also the Regional Deputy Director for Employment in-charge covering nine southern districts, said that there were several vacancies and registered candidates at employment office could give them a try. Venue and eligibility for participation would be publicised through the media.

"We want to help the job seekers, as private sector offers plenty of opportunities, the idea of organising a `sandhai' was considered," she said.

The employment office here was overflowing with candidates from Monday with those who had passed Plus Two registering their names.

In the last two days, 4,000 names were registered.
