HYDERABAD: Authorities will start enforcing a ban on litter of plastic bottles and polythene carry bags in Lumbini and Sanjivaiah parks and on Necklace Road from June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day. Though an order banning litter of plastic carry bags and bottles in public places, parks, playgrounds, waterfronts was issued in 2001, the Budha Poornima Project Authority (BPPA) began enforcing it in NTR Gardens three months ago.
Ban a success
Briefing newsmen on Thursday, N. Chandramohan Reddy, the BPPA OSD, said the ban enforcement at NTR Garden was a success. Visitors were expected to pay a deposit of Rs. 5 for every plastic bottle they carried inside. While leaving, the deposit would be returned if the visitor carried away the bottle with him. Similarly, plastic carry bags would have to be exchanged with a cloth bag by depositing Rs. 20 to be refunded on return of the bag. Mr. Reddy said a special weeklong cleaning drive would be taken up with the help of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to remove the accumulated garbage and debris from the lake shore area from June 5. The BPPA in association with NGOs will organise events like exhibitions and skits from June 3 to 5.
