Chennai : Mayor M. Subramanian presented pension cheques worth Rs. 2.28 crore to retired employees of the Chennai Corporation and their families on Wednesday. Of the 135 retired employees who received the benefits, some had waited for about six years to get the settlement. The amount given varied from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 8.5 lakh based on the employees' grade and years of service. "There were about 800 pending pension cases. In last month's meeting, we gave Rs. 1.64 crore to 168 pensioners. There are still about 500 cases to be cleared," the Mayor said. He assured the pensioners that similar meetings would be held every month till the last pensioner received his or her due. Mr. Subramanian announced that 480 Corporation employees who worked under the National Malaria and Filariasis Control Programme would also be offered pension. Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni, DMK floor leader N. Ramalingam and opposition floor leader Saidai Ravi participated in the function.
