CHENNAI : All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) members staged road blockades in several places in the city condemning the State government for what they called its vindictive attitude against the party general secretary Jayalalithaa. They blocked roads and shouted slogans against the government and the ruling party at 13 locations in the city. Traffic was paralysed on the roads for over an hour. Office goers had a tough time reaching their workplaces as buses and private vehicles came to a grinding halt at many points during the peak hour. The traffic signal had to be switched off in many arterial roads, police said. Scuffles between the protestors and policemen were also reported at some of the places, but senior officers and party functionaries sorted them out. According to a senior police officer, a total of 1,300 persons, including MLAs and senior leaders, courted arrest. After registering cases on charges of unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapons and rioting, they were produced in magistrate courts that remanded them to judicial custody. The arrested were later detained at Puzhal prisons, police said. Later in the evening, 700 of them were granted bail.
