THENI : A special team from the Medical Council of India led by Sanjay Biswas began its two-day inspection-cum-verification of upgraded facilities, equipment, other accessories and amenities provided to students as well as the public at the Theni Government Medical College and Hospital at Andipatti near here on Friday. After the inspection, the team will submit its report to the MCI, which, in turn, will consider granting permission to the college to begin second year MBBS course and renew its recognition granted for the first year. Mahadevan of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry, and Dhanjayan from Karnataka were the other team members. They interacted with doctors, patients and students and checked the college and hospital buildings and facilities individually. The college administration is confident that the college will have no hurdles in getting recognition for the second-year course, as the institution is fully equipped with modern facilities, according to hospital officials. The team visited the college thrice before granting permission to start the MBBS course. The council has already granted permission to start classes in 2006. Hundred students were admitted in the previous academic year. A new block with 300 additional beds has beenfunctioning since last week.
