Helmet rule: hearing adjourned

Staff Reporter

Kochi : A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Friday adjourned by 10 days the hearing on a contempt-of-court petition against the Government for its failure to implement a Full Bench's directive for enforcing the section on wearing of helmets by two-wheeler riders.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice H.L. Dattu and Justice K.T. Sankaran adjourned the hearing to enable the Government pleader to take instruction from the Government on the steps taken to implement the directive.

The petition seeking to initiate contempt proceedings against the State Government and other respondents was filed by George John of Kochi. According to the petitioner, despite the lapse of four years, the State Government had not taken any necessary steps to enforce Section 129 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which makes it compulsory for two-wheeler riders to wear helmets or protective gear.
