Power cuts in several areas

NEW DELHI: As Delhi continued to sizzle at 44 degree Celsius, the demand for power on Sunday spiralled as well. The peak demand was recorded at 3,658 MW.

Excess consumption

Even though most offices were shut, the demand for power continued to remain high as the city relied on air-cooling appliances to beat the heat. With consumption far exceeding the supply, the discoms resorted to load shedding and power cuts were reported from several areas.

"It is unbearably hot and power cuts have made it worse. We have had recurrent power cuts since morning, the only consolation is that the duration is between 30 minutes to an hour," said Shiban Krishan, a resident of Siddhartha Extension in South Delhi.

Overdrawal

The city, which continued to overdraw from the Northern Gird, generated 1,080 MW of power to meet the demand, but still faced a shortfall of about 200 MW.

The supply from Badarpur thermal power station stood at 441 MW, while the Gas Turbine supplied 157 MW, Indraprastha 108 MW and Pragati and Rajghat plants generated 269 MW and 105 MW respectively.

The net consumption of energy till June 9, 2007, has been recorded as 698.82 mu, which is higher than the figure during the corresponding period in June 2006.
