Abhishek rewrites record

After overcoming visa problems on the eve of the team's departure, the Indian junior archery contingent reaped rich rewards at the second Asian championship at Chinese Taipei. Delhi lad Abhishek Verma was the toast of the Indian camp.

He created a new record in the compound bow qualification round by scoring 669 out of possible 720 points at the Taiwan Archery Range on Saturday.

Verma shot 335 and 334 in two 70m distance qualifiers to occupy the first place.

Twelve countries — Korea, Japan, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Indonesia and the host Chinese Taipei — are in the fray.

The ranking and scores (Indians only): Recurve boys: 2. A. Raju 650 points (320+330), 4. Rajib Basumatary 634 (324+310), 7. Prabhat Kandir 632 (313+319). Girls: 1. Nisha Rani Dutta 616 (315+301), 5. Reshma Banerjee 589 (300+289), 7. Pranitha 571 (288+283). Compound boys: 1. Abhishek Verma 669 (335+334), 2. Sumit Mishra 646 (320+326), 4. Sonam Lepcha 609 (314+295). Girls: 2. Namita Yadav 658 (328+330), 3. Sumanlata Murmu 646 (320+326), 4. Niva Kerketta 620 (307+313).
