Talks should be result-oriented: Hurriyat

Srinagar:

The moderate Hurriyat Conference is for resolution of the Kashmir issue through dialogue. It wants the talks process result-oriented and no stress laid on formation of government or giving concessions to Kashmiris.

"The Hurriyat believes in resolution of the Kashmir issue through talks. We are not afraid of talks; ours is a strong case. We will readily accept talks if serious efforts for resolution of the issue is initiated," chairman of the group Mirwaiz Umer Farooq said at a public meeting in Pattan, Baramulla district, on Saturday.

This was the first public meeting in Pattan after nearly 18 years.

Mr. Farooq said, "If the talks focus on participation in elections, government formation or giving concessions to Kashmiris, then pro-India parties are appropriate for that."

He said people had sacrificed their lives not for concessions but for independence.

The Mirwaiz said his group was ready for uniting with the other faction led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

He accused the Centre of trying to crush the "freedom movement" in the State.

The Mirwaiz said the Kashmir issue was alive and would remain so until it was resolved as per the wishes and aspirations of the Kashmiris.

Any solution arrived at between India and Pakistan would not be acceptable to the people of Kashmir. — PTI
