AAI for upgrading Shillong airport

NEW DELHI: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to upgrade the Shillong airport in Meghalaya and make the one near Tura operational.
This was conveyed by the AAI at a meeting with Meghalaya Government officials led by Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee here on Thursday.
Rs. 200-crore project
The meeting was attended by Director-General of Civil Aviation Kanu Gohain.
The estimated total cost of the two projects would be about Rs.200 crore, Airport Authority of India sources said.
The Chief Secretary stressed the need for making the two airports operational on a priority basis as road traffic to Meghalaya through Assam was frequently disrupted due to law and order problems.
Below requirement
The hill-locked north-eastern State was connected only by two weekly flights, which, Mr. Chatterjee said, fell far below the requirement.
Once the airport was upgraded, it would be possible for Boeing 737-class of aircraft to land.
