TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi district administration on Thursday began a probe into a Caesarean section performed by a Standard X student, son of a doctor couple, at a private hospital at Manapparai.

A three-member team, headed by Revenue Divisional Officer S. Ramanidharan, began the inquiry at the hospital on Thursday morning. Joint Director, Medical Services (in-charge) Ezhilarasi Fakhruddin and Deputy Director, Health, V. Veerapandian are the other members of the team.

The team conducted extensive enquiries at the hospital. The inquiry, which went on till late in the evening, is “continuing,” Mr. Ramanidharan said. “We will examine all evidence and report the findings as soon as possible.”

A large number of residents and reporters assembled in front of the hospital.

The incident, which created a flutter in the sleepy town, came to light at last month’s meeting of the Manapparai unit of the Indian Medical Association, where K. Murugesan, a surgeon, and his wife Gandhimathy, a gynaecologist, screened the video of their son M. Dhileepan Raj (15) performing the surgery.

The IMA’s Manapparai unit adopted a resolution on May 11, condemning the act of the couple. IMA State president N. Mohandoss termed it “unethical.”

He said the manapparai unit had informed the IMA State branch. The IMA’s ethics committee had forwarded the complaint to the Tamil Nadu Medical Council.

The newly elected members of the Council would meet shortly to discuss the issue.

IMA Tiruchi branch president S. Gnana Tilakan demanded stringent action against the couple. A senior Health Department official said the couple could be debarred from practising if found guilty.
