Water release from Periyar dam begins

MADURAI: The Public Works Department on Thursday started releasing water from the Periyar dam to replenish the fast depleting storage in the Vaigai dam.

The current storage of 42 mcft in the Vaigai dam will last only a week, with around six mcft being released daily to meet the drinking water requirements of Madurai, Andipatti, Sedapatti and nearby habitats. (Of the 145 mcft, 103 mcft is silt.)
