Puducherry: The Government-sponsored Centralised Admission Committee begun on Thursday counselling of students for admission to teachers’ training institutes for 2007-2008 in the Union Territory.

In addition to the two Government institutes (DIET) in Puducherry and Perunthalaivar Kamarajar College of Education in Karaikal, there are 38 private self-financing institutes in Puducherry and outlying regions.

A spokesman of the committee told The Hindu here on Thursday that the counselling process would go on till June 30.

Special category

Candidates belonging to the special category (those coming under quota for sports, freedom fighters, physically challenged and ex servicemen) were invited for counselling on Thursday. While the Government institutes have 150 seats, the Government also has 1,700 seats as its share in the private institutes.

Counselling will enable the Government to sponsor candidates under its quota. The total duration of the diploma course is two years, and English medium is available only in the DIET in Puducherry, while the remaining institutes, including one in Karaikal, offer the course in Tamil.

Counselling will be given to students to enable them to join arts, science and vocational streams in the institutes. The candidates, passing out of the institutes, would be eligible for posting as teachers in primary schools.

But as far as the posting in Government schools was concerned, the administration has adopted a “merit-based selection”.

The Unemployed Teachers Joint Action Committee has been holding agitations to urge the Government to offer jobs to those who were senior in registration of names in the Employment Exchanges.
