Municipality to keep tabs on employees

Rajesh Nair

PUDUCHERRY: The Oulgaret Municipality seems determined to instil in its staff a sense of discipline and punctuality by introducing fingerprint technology or a punching system to identify employees clocking in and out. “The council has passed a resolution. Now, we are examining various options in the electronic attendance register system, including the bio-matrix method. We are determined to introduce it from August,” T. Diagarajan, Oulgaret Municipality Commissioner, told Th e-Hindu.

There are about 800 employees working in two buildings. To start with, the punching system would be introduced in the new building that houses the Commissioner’s office at Oulgaret, he said.

He said the Municipality was in the process of purchasing the machine at a cost of Rs. 2 lakh.

However, some of the Municipal staff, especially the sanitary workers, are apprehensive about the system. Director of Local Administration E. Vallavan said all concerns would be addressed before implementing the system. If it comes through, the municipality would be the first Government office to have electronic attendance.
