This refers to the Supreme Court’s recommendation to the Centre to amend the Indian Penal Code to provide for enhanced punishment for offences related to rash and reckless driving (June 25). It is unfortunate that the law-enforcing agencies, including the State home departments, have waited for the court to call for enhanced punishment. The Centre should take the recommendation seriously because killing of innocent people by errant drivers, of both four- and two-wheelers, is rampant. It is equally important to make the traffic police, particularly the patrolling wing well-equipped with modern vehicles and gadgets, accountable. Mostly traffic policemen remain silent spectators to rash and erratic driving, particularly by those who want to take a short cut at the peril of law-abiding road users.
