MBBS, BDS merit list released

CHENNAI: The cut-off marks for students aspiring to study MBBS/BDS courses in government medical colleges this year, culled from the XII standard results alone, were announced on Wednesday.

According to Health Minister KKSSR Ramachandran who made the announcement on Wednesday, the cut-off mark for the OC category this year is 197. For BC candidates it is 194.50, for MBCs, 191.75, SCs 187.25 and STs, 179. Seven candidates, who had qualified by scoring 200/200 in the examinations were slotted in the first seven places in the merit list.

P. Praveen Kumar of SRV Boys HSS, Rasipuram, tops the list, followed by R. Nithiyanandan of Kurinji HSS, Namakkal, and M. Karthikeyan, Maharishi Vidya Mandir HSS, Hosur. H. Meena of Avila Convent Matriculation HSS, Coimbatore, C. Jerin Sekhar of Good Shepherd Matric HSS, Kanya Kumari and S. Thahseen Nilofar of SRV Girls HSS, Rasipuram, are ranked fourth, fifth and sixth on the list. G.K. Ashwin Kumar of BVM Matric HSS, who has been ranked seventh, actually passed the examination in the year 2004.

Information about the candidates’ position in the merit list is also available on the Health Department website www.tnhealth.org. The list was prepared after duly incorporating results of the re-evaluation/the re-totalled marks and checking their eligibility, the Minister said. The other criteria for selection were marks in the optional subject, the age of candidate and the random number allotted.

Without the regular entrance exam this year, the Selection Committee had to zero in on another method for evaluating the performance of the students and preparing the merit list. The authorities computed the total marks in Biology with a base of 100.

The marks secured in Physics and Chemistry were added and divided by 4, and thereby, reduced to a base of 100 marks. The total the student has scored is, therefore, computed as marks out of 200.

A total of 12,954 applications were received by the Selection Committee under the general category and 350 under special categories. Of this, 912 candidates were found to be ineligible for reasons such as date of birth, nativity, low marks, improvement scheme, Mr. Ramachandran said. Out of the total number of candidates, who applied for the MBBS/BDS courses this year, 574 had their marks re-evaluated or re-totalled, he told presspersons.

The eligible candidates will be contesting for a total of 1,398 seats in government colleges and 154 seats allotted as government quota in private colleges – IRT Perunthurai, Mookambikai College and PSG College. A total of 85 seats are available in government dental colleges and 326 in self-financing colleges, according to the Secretary, Selection Committee, Kalaiselvi.

The dates for counselling will be announced in a couple of days, according to officials.
