Singur killing: suspect brought to Kolkata

Kolkata: A prime suspect in the alleged murder of a teenaged girl, Tapasi Malik, whose charred body was found at the site of the upcoming Tata Motors car manufacturing project at Singur on December 18, 2006, was brought to the city from Delhi by a team of officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday. He had been taken to the capital for interrogation some days back.

The CBI is also questioning some others in connection with the incident which had created a furore in local political circles at a time when Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee was on a fast in protest against the acquisition of farmland for the Singur project. She had accused workers of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) of being behind the murder.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said earlier this week that his Government was for a speedy end to investigations by the CBI into the incident so that those involved are punished as per the law, no matter which political party they might belong to.
