A total number of 800 applications were received for 240 vacant seats
KUMBAKONAM: The counselling process at Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre of Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) University, Kumbakonam, for admission to B.Tech. programme was conducted on Saturday. The first admit card was given to a girl V. Iswarya, hailing from Mayiladuthurai, with a score of 1119 marks in the main stream of Plus Two examinations. Merit list topper
As the girl, who is the top scorer in the merit list, is fatherless and is being supported by her mother, the management has waived the 25 per cent of the fees. Similarly, the second admit card was given to N. Vinod, hailing from Innambur village near Kumbakonam, who stood II in the State level at the Plus Two examination with vocational subjects scoring 1105 marks out of 1200. He too is fatherless and supported by his mother, who is a daily labourer. The boy hails from a rural village with no financial background and considering the academic achievement and his earnest desire to do engineering course, SASTRA University has waived the total fees for the entire course for him amounting Rs.2.5 lakh. Total applications received at Srinivasa Ramanujan Centre were about 800 against the vacant seats of 240. While handing over the admission cards, Prof. R. Sethuraman, Vice-Chancellor, appealed to the Government that it should offer scholarships to a certain percentage of students and in respect of other students interest-free loans should made available to them repayable on reaching a specified amount of earning.
