KPTCL, ESCOMs have invited tenders for consultancy services

July 12 is last date for response to tenders

Only experienced consultants to be considered

Bangalore: Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL) and the State’s five energy supply companies (ESCOMs) are now planning to go in for carbon credits and carbon trading.

KPTCL and the ESCOMs have invited tenders from agencies for consultancy services on earning carbon credits, assessment, validation and carbon trading. According to sources in KPTCL, the corporation, which has initiated massive investment programmes for energy loss reduction, is of the view that such a measure will help conserve energy and reduce the pressure on power generation projects. This, in turn, will lead to a reduction in the amount of fossil fuels used to generate power, cutting pollution and the emission of greenhouse gases. This will help KPTCL and the ESCOMs explore the possibility of earning carbon credits.

Renewable energy

In addition to this, the power utilities are also banking on the encouragement being given by the State to the generation of renewable energy such as wind power and mini-hydel projects where fossil fuel is not used.

According to sources in Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd. (KREDL), the State has now moved up from the third to second position in the country in terms of wind energy generation.

The ESCOMs and KPTCL have entered into power purchase agreements with these non-conventional energy projects. The power utilities are trying to use this aspect also for carbon trading.

KPTCL and the ESCOMs are going ahead with a massive power system improvement programme with an annual investment of about Rs. 2,500 crore in the transmission sector and Rs. 5,000 crore in the distribution sector for the next three years.

Being showcased

The programme, which is aimed at reducing energy losses, came in for praise from the Chairman of the Rural Electrification Corporation Ltd. during his recent visit to Bangalore. KPTCL is now showcasing this system improvement scheme for carbon trading.

July 12 is the last date for carbon trading consultants to respond to the KPTCL tenders. The bids will be opened the next day.

Payment to carbon consultants will be made on the basis of a certain percentage of revenue earned by the power utilities through carbon trading, sources said. In a bid to get experienced consultants, KPTCL has stated in its tender invitation that providing consultancy for carbon credits for more than 75 projects is one of the eligibility criteria.
