DEVELOPMENT WORK: The North Usman Road-Mahalingapuram intersection where foundation work is under way for a proposed mini-flyover. Traffic diversions keep the stretch busy during peak hours.
Chennai: Construction of a mini-flyover at the North Usman Road–Kodambakkam High Road intersection near Mahalingapuram has commenced with the laying of the foundation under way. Of the four flyovers proposed at busy junctions in the city, work is progressing fast here. Pile testing was completed two months ago. The foundation will be 22.5 metres deep. Traffic has been diverted to facilitate the work and vehicle flow has increased on Bazullah Road and Thirumalai Pillai Road. With the work slowing down traffic on Kodambakkam High Road, additional traffic police personnel have been deputed at the site. Once the work is completed, vehicles from Panagal Park proceeding on North Usman Road towards Nungambakkam and Choolaimedu can take the flyover. Pile testing has also been completed for the other three mini-flyovers to come up at the junctions of G.N. Chetty Road - Thirumalai Pillai Road; Turn Bulls Road - Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar Road; and South Usman Road - Doraisamy Road. Gammon India Limited will construct the four flyovers. The total project value is Rs. 40.81 crore. The Corporation’s cost estimate, including expenditure for land acquisition and transfer of water/sewer lines, is pegged at Rs. 58.52 crore. Work is scheduled to be completed the end of June next year.
