Gone with the wind

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Why were two people clambering up the Krishnarajapuram cable bridge at 7.30 Tuesday morning? No, it wasn’t a co-ordinated suicide attempt or a bungee jumping show. No one was trying to emulate Dharmendra in Sholay ( or Anthony Quinn in The Secret of Santa Vittoria from which the Sholay scene was lifted) either. But on a windy morning, the scene was dramatic enough.

Of course by Greenpeace standards, this was a matter of routine. Two Greenpeace activists, part of a group of four, wanted to unfurl a 30 x 30 foot banner to draw attention to the serious issue of genetically modified (GM) food. They wanted the big brands to ensure the food they sold was not GM. And the banner was to proclaim their high intention.

However, what they did not reckon with was the high-velocity wind that has been shooing away our rains. It ripped apart the banner when it was in the early stages of being unfurled.

Mission aborted.
