A tryst with middles and middle class

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Bi-lingual author J. Bhagyalakshmi has come out with a compilation of “middles” written through the course of her journalistic career for various newspapers.

Titled “That’s Ok Tammanna And Other Reveries”, the book was officially released by former Prime Minister I. K. Gujral here on Tuesday in the presence of the former Ambassador to the United States Abid Hussain. The compilation is in the form of a narrative and deals with a wide range of issues like environment, pollution, traffic, road-rage, power-cuts, and water shortage.

Indian Society of Authors president Dinesh Mishra equated the occasion of a book-launch to a birth in a family and conducted the proceedings.

“An art”

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Gujral said writing “middles” was an art that provided a glimpse into the culture and societal practices of a time period. These days the middle pages in newspapers were getting squeezed which was symbolic of our times when the middle-class was also struggling for space, he added.

Dr. Abid Hussain lauded the author and said the editorial section was a powerful tool in the hands of a scribe and had an impact far beyond its word-length. Dr. Bhagyalakshmi was formerly with the Indian Information Service and has authored short-story and poetry collections.
