New forum on education issues emerging: Pillai

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Congress (B) leader R. Balakrishna Pillai has said that a new forum on education issues is emerging in the State as a result of the education policy followed by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr. Pillai said the Christian and Muslim communities and the Nair Service Society (NSS) had “justifiably” expressed their differences of opinion on some aspects of the education policy. They were justified in expressing their opinion because the apprehensions they had about the LDF rule was much sharper than that experienced during the “liberation struggle”. Religious heads and community leaders had to face more insulting postures these days than during the “liberation struggle,” he said.

He said that several power centres had emerged in recent years which went against the Kerala Education Act and the Kerala Education Rules. These power centres were imposing their will on educational institutions much against the generally accepted education policy of the Government which had full powers relating to payment of salary, transfer and posting in the aided sector. The dual control was against the existing rule and not acceptable, he said.

Mr. Pillai expressed concern at the uncertainty prevailing over admissions to the self-financing professional institutions.
