Jayalalithaa alleges undeclared power cut

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Tuesday alleged that an undeclared power cut prevailed in the State, affecting farm, industrial and domestic sectors.

In a statement here, she said farmers, entrepreneurs, persons running small scale industries and domestic consumers were badly hit by the power cut at a time when the TNEB was celebrating its golden jubilee. It should be the primary duty of the Government to take corrective and remedial measures to ensure that problems such as power cut and low voltage were prevented, she said.

Electricity Minister Arcot N.Veerasamy’s remark that there was no power cut but there had been interruption in supply on a few occasions was contrary to truth, Ms. Jayalalithaa said. Chennai was experiencing power cut and the situation in the rural areas was worse.

Failure to draw adequate water for irrigation from deep bore wells, owing to power cut and lack of quality supply might result in crop loss, she said. Powerloom operators were not in a position to manufacture different varieties of cloth due to frequent interruption in supply, she alleged.
