Over to the mountains: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit taking a look at the photographs after inaugurating the exhibition ‘Mist from Mountains’ at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts on Monday.
NEW DELHI: “Mist from the Mountains”, an exhibition of photographs on Arunachal Pradesh by civil servant Keshav Chandra and Moji Riba of Rajiv Gandhi University at Itanagar, was inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts here on Monday.
The exhibition has photographs documenting the land and the people of Arunachal Pradesh along with their faith, rituals, arts and lifestyles of prominent tribes. It will be on view up to July 24.
The IGNCA has initiated several projects on the North-East in order to build up a large archive and documentation resource on the region, which is rich with several tribal communities, each unique in their lifestyle.
‘Significant’
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Dikshit observed that the exhibition was especially significant since it was dedicated to the State of Arunachal Pradesh, which was a living museum and laboratory of the bio-culture diversity of the North-East.
IGNCA Trust president Chinmay Gharekhan said the exhibition was an initiative to showcase their endeavour to look at different communities of the country, especially the North-East and in particular Arunachal Pradesh, in relation to their culture and environment and their interdependence with society. Keshav Chandra, who is now Special Secretary to the Delhi Chief Minister, said he had meticulously photographed the various tribes of Arunachal Pradesh for six years during his tenure as District Magistrate in various districts of the State. The land of Arunachal Pradesh is rich with mountains, rivers and lakes. There are 26 major tribes in the State and it is strategically important for India.
