Krishnagiri: If you thought that Krishnagiri is educationally backward you are in for a surprise. Students of Panchayat Union Middle Schools at Sappadi and Pathakotta in Shoolagiri block have bagged the first and third prize respectively in the State level Science Quiz competition organised by AID India foundation in Chennai recently. A total of 30,000 students of Standards VII and VIII from Krishnagiri, Vellore, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Tiruchi, Cuddalore and Thiruvunnamalai and Sivagangai districts participated in the preliminary rounds, which were conducted at the block and district level. 52 teams
Nearly 52 teams, each comprising three students, from the above districts were short listed for the finals. The Panchayat Union Middle School at Sappadi had to face stiff competition from other schools in the State. The winners were given trophies, certificates and science books. Sources in AID India pointed out that implementation of Ariviyal Anandam (Science is Fun) programme in Krishnagiri district has helped in developing an aptitude for science in children to a great extent. Based on this programme simple experiments could be performed by using low-cost experiments that children see around them every day. As a result children developed their own experiments, which helped them emerge winners in the competition. The programme has improved their learning of science.
