Food quality monitoring: some unpalatable truths

Even as the concept of eating out caught up with denizens, concerns remain over lack of hygiene in the kitchens at eateries, quality of food served by them and even fears on the safety of water served at some places. Several random samples collected by agencies concerned have put the eateries in dock over the drinking water quality in particular. With the food quality monitoring mechanism in the city hampered by inadequate strength of inspectors on roll, the actual proport ion of the problems posed by eating out remain unclear.

Adding to it, the recent episode of some of the staff detained by a food joint in the city has added a new dimension to the whole affair.

Comedian Ash Chandler was at his best during a visit to the city last Saturday. Chandler, this time, rounded off his rib-tickling party jokes, by paying ‘tributes’ to burglars, petty thieves and all those in the business of ‘stealing, shop-lifting and hacking’. “But for them (burglars) we would not had this lovely party, the dinner and the ramp show,” his quick repartee made everyone think for sometime, before the audience burst into lau ghter. The party was hosted by a company that’s market leader in sale of burglar alarms, remote cameras and a host of electronic security systems and solutions!

If you thought politicians do not join their hands together to fight for a cause, then think again! At a meeting conducted recently to review arrangements for the forthcoming Bonalu festival, politicians cutting across party lines cornered officials concerned for their laidback attitude.

Echoing the views of opposition MLAs G. Sayanna and G. Kishen Reddy, ruling party MLAs P. Janardhan Reddy and M. Shashidhar Reddy came down heavily on the district administration for the tardy progress of pending works. True to their colours of utilising ‘opportunities’, the legislators present at the meeting made most out of the meeting.

It was one of those typical police actions - fast and furious, with nary a fuss and without giving people any time to think, or even blink an eye. That was the scene on Monday at Dharna Chowk where the Mala Mahanadu (Karem Sivaji-led group) issued an ultimatum to State Government saying they would go to any length to stop categorisation of Scheduled Castes.

‘Praanalaina arpistham, A, B, C, D aapistham’ (We’ll give up our lives to stop categorisation), they thundered. When a journalist asked Mr. Sivaji for a press release, he was told it was being photocopied.

However, even before the photocopies could arrive and even as the harassed journos were having a cuppa by the roadside, police bundled them into waiting vans.

And that was the end of the matter !
