In the exhibition, giant wheels, revolving / dancing chairs and mini trains are operated for entertaining children. Some of these games are played at an elevated position and the reliability with regard to safety aspect is not ascertainable. Hence, the Government may ask the operators to display the safety licence, optimum accommodative capacity for each of the game, validity period of the licence etc. Moreover, Tiruchi Corporation is considering a proposal for developing a water theme park. Keeping in mind the water requirement of the city, the Corporation may consider a proposal for a simple theme park duly installing all the above said games permanently. By doing so, it can ensure the safety of children using them. Operating the theme park throughout the year will also ease out the congestion at the exhibition, operating only for a specific period. P.K. Raman Tiruchi Flood warning
It is an irony that warning for flood has reached even before water could be seen in the Cauvery. Should we call it as water management or crisis management? If the authority had been on the vigil, such a situation could have been pre-empted. Their ‘water intelligence’ should have been so effective that they should have not only kept a watch on Mettur dam, but also on the dams on the other side in Karnataka, their holding capacity, inflow of water coupled with the predictability of ongoing monsoon. SR Ilango Tiruchi Re-lay road
The four-km long Mannachanallur-Samayapuram Road is a link road between Chennai-Tiruchi National Highway and Tiruchi-Namakkal-Salem State Highway. It serves as an emergency road as well. The road has developed many potholes during last monsoon. Though the patch-up work was carried out last month, many pits are left as such. One can see gravel meant for the works lying on the sides of the road. The degree of damage is increasing rapidly as the water leaking from the nearby taps get stagnated on the road. The authorities should relay the road and clear the roadsides for free movement of traffic. S. Chandrasekar Mannachanallur Divert buses
There is a long pending demand from the residents of Thillai Nagar, Woraiyur and Puthur for direct bus service to Tiruchi Railway Junction. In the absence of a direct bus route, those going to the junction find it very difficult. At present, some of the buses to the central bus stand go via American Hospital and Seva Sangam. After dropping all the passengers in front of Plaza Complex, these buses make empty trips via the express bus stand to reach the central bus stand. Those going to railway junction have to take another bus, even then, they have to alight near Junction round-about and walk to the station. If some of the buses, if not all, are diverted from American Hospital via the Head Post Office and railway station, it will be of much help to the passengers. It is requested that the Transport Minister who is well aware of this problem may look into this long pending demand at the earliest. S. Sundaram Tiruchi Erect speed breakers
A portion of the road at Seshadripuram in Srirangam was re-laid recently. But the joy of the residents over the fulfilment of one of their long pending demands is marred due to mindless speeding by all sorts of vehicles. The area is dotted with many houses and residential apartments. A large number of students use the road to go to their schools. The speeding vehicles pose a real danger to the safety of these children and others. Hence I request the authorities to erect speed breakers at three points, one near the Malattar Bridge, another at the middle of the stretch and the third one at the end of Seshadripuram road. J. Anantha Padmanabhan Tiruchi Clear encroachments
Chinthamani Baazar is a busy road and there is constant movement of traffic all through the day. Though the corporation has laid beautiful stone platforms covering the water drainage on both sides of the road, provision and poultry shops, snack bars and other shops display their wares on them making it difficult for the pedestrians to use the platforms. Corporation and police officials should ensure that platforms are cleared for pedestrians to walk. V. Santhanagopalan Tiruchi Passport
Issuing of new and renewal of passports are taking much longer in Tiruchi passport office. Recently I got a passport renewed after a gap of 90 days. But the passport officials are maintaining that they are issuing within 40-50 days. The police report is taking much of the time. In my case it took more than a month (actually it took 50 days) for a file to travel within Tiruchi. The police commissioner should take steps and regulate the maximum time taken for verification. They are advising to submit the details through Internet to avoid rush. But even then we have to stand in the queue to get our papers verified, which defeats the purpose of filing them in Internet. They should allot specific time for the people who had submitted the details via internet. The police and passport officials should frame guidelines for the process and hold regular review meetings to clear the backlog. Will the authorities do the needful at the earliest? Shankar Tiruchi Core banking?
As of now, the State Bank of India has introduced core banking system (CBS), where by a customer of savings bank account can make deposit, withdraw (with limitations) and make entries in the passbook from any branch across India. As a customer of Tiruchi main branch, when I stepped in Rockfort city branch to deposit cash, I was curtly forced to write my address in the column meant for “change of address, if any” in the deposit challan, which is not necessary. When I brought the issue to the notice of the Branch Manager, she was unable to give clear reason for such a practise. Will the zonal authorities concerned look into this matter? C. Ramalingam Tiruchi Facilities in platform
Impending improvements in passenger amenities as a result of Rs.20 lakh facelift for Tiruchi Junction (The Hindu, July 8) that the primary aim is facilitating easy movement of passengers and sprucing up station’s interiors bes ides frontage are no doubt laudable but they do not include the most neglected passenger facilities like extension of roof to cover the whole length of the platforms, better lavatory amenities and lighting in the extended platforms and importantly compatible platform flush with foot boards for easy alighting. While even Tiruchi Junction suffers for want of platform facilities, the less said the better with other important stations like Tiruchi Fort and Srirangam. Not long ago, fatal accidents took place while alighting in Srirangam due to inadequate height and gap involving senior citizens. Passenger safety should be given first priority in any improvement of passenger amenities ahead of cosmetic changes in railway’s facelift operation. A.V. Narayanan Tiruchi
