Hari back in joint lead

Chanda and Kunte share third spot

NEW DELHI: P. Hari Krishna bounced back with a vengeance to nail Canada’s Mark Bluvshtein and joined the four-man leaders’ group with 3.5 points after the fifth round of the Montreal International chess tournament at Montreal on Tuesday.

Hari’s 39-move victory in Queen’s Pawn Opening came when Bluvshtein, down four pawns, realised that he could not force a draw through perpetual checks.

The result put Hari on equal points with Sergei Tiviakov, Vassily Ivanchuk and Gata Kamsky.

In the Quebec Open, also in progress in Montreal, Sandipan Chanda and Abhijeet Kunte shared the third spot after drawing their respective games.

Good news awaited

Great news awaited the Indians from Balaguer, Spain, when National junior champion Abhijeet Gupta made the required seven points from nine rounds to meet the GM-norm stipulation after beating compatriot B. Adhiban in the ninth and penultimate round of the Balaguer International Open.
