Murder mystery solved

NEW DELHI: A young man has been arrested by the South Delhi police on charges of killing a public relations professional in a bid to rob him at Lajpat Nagar here on Sunday. Two of his accomplices are still at large.

The body of 34-year-old Saravjit Singh, bearing a cut injury mark on the shoulder, was found near the Jal Vihar slum clusters on Sunday morning. The police learnt that Saravjit was a habitual drinker and used to visit Madrasi Camp jhuggis to buy liquor at odd hours.

Enquiries revealed that three residents of the slum cluster -- Shyam Mundi, Anand Raj and Deenu -- had gone missing after the incident. Suspecting their involvement, a Lajpat Nagar police team launched a hunt for them. Acting on a tip-off that Shyam would come to his jhuggi on Tuesday, the police laid a trap and arrested him and recovered a bloodstained shirt from the jhuggi. At his instance, they also recovered a knife used in the crime.

Shyam purportedly disclosed that late on Saturday night he and his accomplices, Anand and Deenu, were searching for a prospective target when they spotted Saravjit walking alone on the road near the Jal Vihar slum cluster. They overpowered him and Shyam allegedly attacked him with the knife, injuring him on the shoulder.
