Arrest warrant issued against CPI(M) leaders

Case relates to attack on the police four years ago


THALASSERY: The District and Sessions Court here on Thursday issued arrest warrant against Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders, including Kannur MP A.P. Abdullakutty and K.K. Shylaja, MLA, for their continuous failure to appear in court in connection with a case relating to the attack on the police during a protest march in Kannur four years ago.

Assistant Sessions judge V.P. Jayanand issued the warrant against Mr. Abdullakutty, Ms. Shylaja, CPI(M) leaders T. Govindan, M.V. Govindan, James Mathew, T. Krishnan and K.P. Sahadevan for their continuous absence in court when the case was taken up. A total 218 people, including the CPI(M) leaders, were included as accused in the case.

They were charged with attempts to murder police officers by hurling country-made bombs during a protest march to the office of the Superintendent of Police here on March 17, 2003.

The case was registered on a complaint lodged by the then Dy.SP P.K. Vijayan.
