Bitter end to Andhra Pradesh monsoon session

HYDERABAD: The monsoon session of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly concluded on Friday on the same bitter and acrimonious note which marked the proceedings during the past ten days. The controversy over the lease for Obulapuram iron ore mines, the Left parties’ land struggle and G.O. 34 on micro-irrigation dominated the session.
The Council also adjourned sine die but without much controversy keeping in tune with the proceedings during the nine-day-long session. The debates in the Upper House were bereft of the political rancour and heated exchanges witnessed in the Assembly and there were muted murmurs of protest when Chairman A. Chakrapani announced the adjournment.
The Assembly did not transact any business on the final day as members of the Telugu Desam and Left parties obstructed proceedings demanding a debate on the police lathicharge on CPI (M) and CPI activists in different places on Thursday when they picketed District Collector’s offices as part of the land struggle.
The proceedings lasted a bare 15 minutes during which members of the three parties surrounding the podium of Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy insisted on a discussion on the notices of adjournment they had tabled. Mr. Reddy adjourned the House within ten minutes of commencement and met floor leaders in an effort to end the stalemate.
Slogans raised
When the House re-assembled an hour later, the agitated members re-enacted the scenes. The Speaker immediately dropped the Question Hour and announced that he had no option but to adjourn the House sine die as his efforts to break the impasse had not succeeded. Protesting the abrupt end to the session, members of the TDP, CPI (M) and CPI left the House raising slogans and later staged a protest by squatting on the stairs leading to the entrance.
