MUMBAI: Manipur’s M. Sunita Chanu worked hard for a 3-0 victory over Mizoram’s S. Malsawmsangi in the women’s individual kumite (48-53kg) event at the 20th National karate championships here on Friday. The 21-year-old teacher kept her nerve in the face of a relentless effort by her rival to improve upon the two silver medals won in previous Nationals. Maharashtra’s Roshnesh K’Maneck, second in kata on the opening day, went one better by winning the women’s individual kumite (above 60kg) title, getting the better of Rajasthan’s Monica Sargia.
The results: Men: Kata: 1. Ashish Wakte (CRPF), 2. T. Dhanraj Poojary (Mah), 3. Pratap Biswas (Ori) & Dhanakkumar D (TN). Kumite (55-60kg): Final: Praveen Kumar (Bih) bt Dhirender Negi (ITBP). Third: Dilipkumar Malav (MP) & Rahul Parmar (Mah). Kumite (65-70kg): Final: Pratap Biswas (Ori) bt Anand Singh (ITBP). Third: Dinesh Bhatti (CRPF) & Raza Hussain (Mah). Women: Kumite (48-53kg): Final: M. Sunita Chanu (Man) bt S. Malsawmsangi (Miz). Third: L. Rupa Bhargavi (AP) & Arthi Jeeva K (TN). Kumite (above 60kg): Final: Roshneesh K’Maneck (Mah) bt Monica Sargia (Raj).
