Husband of American citizen surrenders in Hyderabad

To pay back her money in two years
Hyderabad: K.V. Rama Rao, husband of Joy Wright Kancharla, the American woman who came to the city searching for him, surrendered to the Saroornagar police on Friday afternoon.
The 56-year-old homeopath, who had allegedly borrowed $ 148,000 from his wife and came to Hyderabad without informing her, claimed that he had invested the money in a land near Ghatkesar but was duped by a broker in 2004.
He also claimed that the land documents had been misplaced.
Married in 2001
Rama Rao and Joy Wright got married in 2001.
She left for the USA and got him a visa following which, he too migrated.
In their five years of marriage, Rama Rao allegedly borrowed the above mentioned amount on the plea that he was investing in real estate ventures at Hyderabad assuring her that the returns would be high. Ms. Wright earlier claimed that Rama Rao was not in touch with her since June 2006.
Rama Rao, who was looking very tense, told the police that he was sick and staying in Bangalore all these days.
All through, his wife chose to remain silent and refused to talk to him.
The accused also explained that he had got his daughter (from his first wife) married and this was not informed to his American wife.
Rama Rao also said that he would pay back the money to Ms. Wright in two years.
Anonymous caller
Earlier, Ms. Wright told the police that two days after reports of her missing husband appeared in the media, an anonymous caller contacted her and “advised” her not to approach the media or the police to trace Rama Rao.
Case booked
The police said a case was booked against Rama Rao under Sections 420 and 406 of Indian Penal Code for cheating and criminal breach of trust.
