Hospitals not in the pink of health

Many hospitals in Khammam district are in deplorable condition, if the findings of the Progressive Organisation for Women (POW) survey are to be believed. As many as 49 doctor posts are lying vacant in primary health centres in 110 villages in the district. While seven health extension officer posts are also vacant, there are no lab technicians in 18 hospitals. There is no supply of medicines to many PHCs in the district. It is time the government took a serious view of the problem.

Police firing avoidable

The Mudigonda incident has once again reminded us of the fact that the feudalistic and suppressive approach of successive governments has not changed. From Jallianwalla Bagh to Mudigonda, people were killed in police firing for raising their voice against the ruling regime. It is unfortunate that every person, who is at the helm of affairs, believes in bullet. The police could have avoided firing had they been little more careful.

Women farmers show the way

Jai Balaram Kisan Mahila Bank of Nagulapalem village in Parchur mandal of Prakasam district should be a guiding light for many women farmers across the State. The bank has come into existence exactly a year ago when seven women joined hands and decided to pool Rs. 50 every month. Now, the membership has grown to 50, and all the women are farmers. Now, they rely neither on private money lenders nor on nationalised and commercial banks for loans. Hope other women farmers take inspiration from this bank.

Kalam’s remarks

Former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s remarks on Manusmriti irked many Dalits.

He is not a social scientist like B.R. Ambedkar. It may be a good idea to give him books written by Dr. Ambedkar, as he hasn’t come across the cruelty of casteism. Ambedkar’s books like ‘Riddles of Hinduism’ can be read, so that he would understand the problems of casteism.
