Welcome judgment

Life imprisonment for 21 persons in the Tsundur massacre case (Aug. 1) marks the triumph of democratic Dalit movements, particularly in Andhra Pradesh, that stood by the victims since the massacre took place in 1991. One hopes all pending cases of atrocities on Dalits will be disposed of similarly by setting up special courts. The implementation of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act should be reviewed from time to time so that the trust of the downtrodden in the criminal justice system is enhanced.

The special court judgment is a warning to those who exploit and suppress the weakest sections. Dalits have as much right to live as has anyone else. The verdict is an assurance to the downtrodden that they need not fear anyone.

The massacre of eight Dalits by a mob is certainly not the rarest of rare cases, as observed by the judge. It is the norm in India.
