On jallikattu

The Supreme Court deserves praise for staying a Madras High Court judgment refusing to ban jallikattu (taming bulls ) in Tamil Nadu (July 28). Not only are the bulls subjected to cruelty but immature young men who challenge them are exposed to high risk. The so-called valiant games originated in the none-but-the-brave-deserve-the-fair proclamations of kings and noblemen who wanted the best suitors for their daughters. Gradually, the sports became a means of amusement. It is unwise to let such inhuman and uncivilised games to continue in the name of tradition and culture.
