Chennai: G. Venkataraman, consultant to Thermax India Ltd., Pune and former additional general manager, BHEL, Tiruchi, has won the ‘Honourable Mention Prize’ in the International Metallographic Contest 2007 for his work on ‘Improvement of high stress wear performance of weld by metallographic feedback.’ The contest was organised as part of the Fortieth Annual Convention of International Metallographic Society, a wing of the American Society for Metals International, in Florida, U.S., earlier this month. The award-winning work involved utilising new devices for investigating microstructures of wear-resistant welds alloyed with chromium, tungsten, molybdenum and iron, using metallurgical microscope. With this development, the wear performance and life are improved, resulting in significant savings in the use of welding consumables.
