Remarks against woman member triggers protest TDP members seek discussion on irregularities
VIZIANAGARAM: The Zilla Parishad general body meeting on Saturday witnessed acrimonious scenes as members of both and TDP and Congress rushed to Chairperson’s podium several times to make their point clear and loud. The unruly scenes continued for over one-and-a-half hours despite repeated appeals from Chairperson Baddukonda Appala Naidu to resume to their seats and allow the meeting to discuss issues listed on the agenda. As the meeting began 30 minutes late TDP president and ZPTC Yadla Ramana Murty and MLA Tentu Jayaprakash, pointing out the time factor, asked the Chairperson to discuss major issues such as deaths in agency mandals, NREGP, Housing etc instead of discussing all the 54 subjects listed on the agenda. ‘Misleading reports’
Even before the Chairperson gave his ruling, Kolaka Lakshmana Murty, MLA (CPI-M), demanded action in view of malaria and diarrhoea in the agency mandals. He said Medical and Health officials were giving misleading reports saying that the deaths were due to consumption of stale meat and contaminated water. District Medical and Health Officer V. Venkateswara Rao said three medical camps were conducted in the affected 15 villages in Salur mandal and also disinfected the areas. While the discussion was on Chairman of Zilla Grandhalaya Samstha Datti Lakshmana Rao’s remarks against the MLA and ZPTC member from G.L. Puram K. Lakshmi (CPI-M) sparked uproarious scenes from TDP benches. They rushed to the Chairperson’s podium and demanded that Mr. Lakshmana Rao tender an apology to the woman member. After several rounds of protests at the podium by TDP and CPI(M) members the member withdrew his remarks. The TDP members rushed to the podium for a couple of times later demanding a discussion on irregularities in employment guarantee scheme and non-supply of agriculture implements to farmers. Normalcy returned after the Chairperson assured the members that the issues raised by them would be discussed on priority.
