BHEL wins major contract from DVC

Gearing up to raise capacity to 15,000 MW
To introduce 800 MW thermal sets

NEW DELHI: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), beating international competition, bagged a mega turnkey contract from Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) for setting up two units of 500 MW each at Koderma Thermal Power Station (TPS) in Jharkhand and two units of 500 MW each at Durgapur Steel TPS in West Bengal.

According to an official spokesman here, the projects are valued at over Rs. 6,500 crore.

The spokesman said that BHEL’s scope of work in the contract envisages manufacture, supply, erection testing and commissioning of steam turbines, generators, boilers, associated auxiliaries, balance of plant and electricals besides state-of-the-art Controls and Instrumentation (C&I), Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) and switchyard including civil works.

The spokesman said that in view of the Union Power Ministry’s thrust on meeting the challenges of generating 78,000 MW of power during the XI plan, BHEL had decided to take up the challenge in right earnest. It has established state-of-the-art technology for the manufacture of thermal sets up to 500 MW rating and had the capability to manufacture sets up to 1,000 MW rating. So far, orders for 58 numbers of 500 MW rating sets have been won, of which 31 have been commissioned. BHEL is now poised to introduce 800 MW thermal sets with supercritical parameters.

BHEL has equipped itself to produce thermal power equipment for 800 MW sets and above, suited to Indian conditions, using Indian and imported coal.

It is also gearing up to increase its capacity during the next three years from the current level of 6,000 MW to 15,000 MW annually with a total investment of around Rs. 3,200 crore.
