CHENNAI: The Pulianthope zone has not yet been handed over to Neel Metal, the solid waste management contractor, which took over garbage clearance in Ice House, Adyar and Kodambakkam zones (6, 8 and 10) on Sunday. The firm’s performance would be assessed for a month before giving charge of the Pulianthope zone, Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said. The Chennai Corporation has not halted conservancy work in Pulianthope yet. The local body had sent 100 lorries to augment the Neel Metal fleet and help clear the backlog of garbage left by the previous contractor, Onyx, from the three zones. The Corporation would be lending Neel Metal ‘temporary dustbins’ until it got its own. Mr. Lakhoni said the hiccups in the transfer of responsibility from Onyx to Neel Metal had been caused by the former’s lack of interest towards the end of its term. By Wednesday, the backlog of garbage would be cleared. Mayor M. Subramanian urged Neel Metal to speed up garbage clearance.
