Corrections and clarifications

  • A sentence in the fourth paragraph of an article by Prakash Karat, “Why the CPI(M) and the Left oppose the nuclear deal” (Editorial page, August 20, 2007) was: “Prior to the joint statement of July 2005, the UPA Government signed a ten-year Defence Framework Agreement with the Untied States.” It should have been the United States.

  • A sentence in an article “Indian firm acquires uranium mining rights in Niger” (August 19, 2007) was: “Today, Niger is the fifth largest supplier of uranium in the world — the refined form of this atomic element is also called ‘yellow cake’.” A reader points out that this is incorrect. The writer, Pallava Bagla, clarifies that yellow cake is an intermediate form of uranium ore which is mostly 70 per cent to 80 per cent by weight of triuranium octoxide (U{-3}O{-8}) and the rest is composed of other oxides of uranium.

  • In a report “EGoM on gas pricing to meet” (August 26, 2007), the expansion of CoS should have been the Committee of Secretaries.

  • A sentence in the text and the blurb of a report “Vaiko urges organisations to desist from supporting fundamentalists” (Tamil Nadu, August 27, 2007, page 9) was: “‘It was not taken out not with an eye on votes, but to promote religious and communal harmony’.” It should have been: “It was not taken out with an eye on votes, but to promote religious and communal harmony’.”

  • In an ANI report “Help at hand for the obese” (“Newscape” page, August 27, 2007), the contraction of Body Mass Indices was given as MBI. It should have been BMI.

  • The column “Level Playing Field”, titled “The Barts legacy” (The Hindu-Magazine, August 26, 2007, page 3), incorrectly stated that William Harvey was a surgeon. The Royal College of Physicians says th at Sir William Harvey (1578-1657) was a physician and discoverer of the circulation of the blood. (In 1628, Harvey published at Frankfurt his discovery of the circulation of the blood, in a book entitled “Exercitatio Anatomica de Motu Cordis et Sangiunis in Animalibus”.)
