A sentence in “Conflict over divisions” (Editorial”, August 28, 2007) was: “When Mr. Prasad told the Lok Sabha that the inauguration of the new Salem division, scheduled for September 14, would be postponed till a compromise was arrived at between the two States, all hell broke lose.” It should have been “when all hell broke loose”.
An ANI report “Help at hand for the obese” (“Newscape” page, August 27, 2007) quoted an expert on the causes of obesity as saying that the number of overweight people in India, 2.1 billion, is equal t
o the number of underweight people. (This would imply that India has a population upwards of 4.2 billion people. The estimated population of India (July 2007) is 1,129,866,154 people.) ANI clarifies that it should have been “the number of overweight people in India, 2.1 million ….”
A sentence in a report “National [boxing] championship gets underway today” (“Sport”, August 25, 2007) was: “About six States learnt this the hard way as the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation tightened its rules with regard to the entries from each participating unit”, leading to a query about what it was. The Sports Desk clarifies that the States learnt the hard way that States and institutions which failed to win any medals during the last three Nationals preceding the current one were allowed entries in only six of the 11 weight categories. This explanation was left out in some editions.
In the Geoffrey Boycott column “Bat the opposition out of the game” (“Sport”, August 24, 2007), Stuart Broad was erroneously referred to as Chris Broad. The column talked about Steve Harmison’s return. He has retired from ODIs.
Referring to a report “Best on planet ready” (“Sport”, August 25, 2007), a few readers point out that the event in which China’s Liu Xiang would participate in was missed out. It is the 110m hurdles.
In the agency preview of the U.S Open, “Young rivals a threat to Federer” (“Sport”, August 27, 2007), the list of top players whom Djokovic beat on the way to the Montreal Masters Crown was mentioned in the wrong order as Federer, Nadal and then Andy Roddick. It should have been Roddick, Nadal and Federer.
The strapline of a report “A passion for Bradman memorabilia” (“Newscape” page, August 28, 2007) was: “On an impressive collection — on the Don’s 99th birthday today.” It was a
n error. Don Bradman’s birthday was on August 27. (Sir Donald George Bradman was born in the western NSW town of Cootamundra on August 27, 1908.)
