NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday said that in order to provide a safe, convenient and modern public transport bus system the Delhi Government is planning to introduce 1,000 good quality private buses through participation of the corporate sector and cooperatives. This move, she said, would also reduce the increasing burden on the Delhi Transport Corporation.
Launching a “Legal awareness campaign for school children on traffic rules and regulations”, the Chief Minister said if necessary the Government would also recommend to the Union Government to make the punishment for fatal road accidents more stringent by amending Section 304(A) of the Indian Penal Code.
“Children,” she said, “can play a vital role in road safety campaigns. It is also important for pedestrians to be careful on the roads. Likewise, lane-driving, not overtaking and avoiding boarding or alighting from a moving bus can go a long way in reducing road accidents.”
The Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice M. K. Sharma, also said children can effectively spread the messages of road safety and help in implementation of traffic rules. He appreciated the efforts of the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and the Delhi Traffic Police in publishing guide books for school buses.
Accidents
Delhi Police Special Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said the traffic police had started a major road safety campaign to curb accidents as nearly 1 lakh people are killed in road accidents across the country every year.
