PATNA: People protesting the suspension of a police officer, who allegedly failed to discharge his duties, blocked National Highway 31 here on Tuesday. The officer-in-charge of Chakia police station in Begusarai district was suspended for failing to take two alleged criminals shot by security guards of the Barauni Thermal Power Station to hospital in time. Both died due to loss of blood on Sunday. The two alleged criminals writhed in pain for more than four hours as the police watched. The security personnel of the undertaking opened fire on them when they allegedly tried to steal scrap from inside the premises. Two others escaped but one of them was later nabbed. Even as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar listened to complaints against the police at a janata darbar here, people in Nawada district beat up three alleged vehicle-lifters. One of them is said to have suffered permanent damage to an eye. The villagers of Telgikhatangi reportedly tried to blind the others too. They suffered grievous injuries.
