Horns, hides of rare deer seized

Correspondent

IMPHAL: Assam Rifles personnel have seized a large quantity of horns and hides of a rare deer — the brow antlered deer — and other animals. These were meant to be smuggled out to China and South East Asian countries for use in traditional medicines.

Deer horns

In one instance, personnel of 24 Assam Rifles seized from the house of a tribal at Moreh in Manipur, along the international border, 1.850 kg of brow antlered deer horns on Tuesday, says a press release.

Also seized were 16 hides of a rare species of mongoose.

One-horned rhinos found in Assam are also slaughtered by professional armed poachers.

Carcasses in market

Headless deer carcasses are openly sold in markets in Nagaland and Manipur.
