Kolkata: A “general” alert has been sounded across the coastal belt of West Bengal in the wake of a massive earthquake in Indonesia earlier on Wednesday evening. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. The administration of South 24 Parganas district received reports of mild tremors occurring in some areas but a senior official dismissed them as “rumours.”There were also unofficial reports of a sudden rise in the level of the water in certain ponds in the Sunderbans area of the district. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
