Mayhem on court campus: A lawyer undergoing treatment at the Patna Medical College and Hospital for injuries he sustained in violent incidents at the Patna civil court on Thursday.

PATNA: Lawyers across Bihar struck work on Thursday soon after intruders killed an undertrial prisoner on the civil court premises here and exploded bombs that left three of their colleagues injured.

The lawyers have decided to boycott courts on Friday also.

The motorcycle-borne attackers barged into the court premises and shot dead a handcuffed Haribansh Rai, who was in police custody. The intruders blasted at least three bombs.

Three lawyers and another prisoner was injured. In the melee, some prisoners were said to have escaped.

Rai figured in a dozen criminal cases, including the murder of three members of a family last year.

One of the seriously injured lawyers Sudhir was admitted to the Patna Medical College Hospital but his colleagues were upset at doctors not attending on him in the emergency ward, it is alleged. Junior doctors clashed with them and also beat up reporters.

Then the junior doctors struck work and closed the emergency ward.

The police have recovered at least a couple of live bombs from a nearby sweetmeat shop. No arrest has been made so far.
